Variety Positioning

• SY Kestrel is the second BYDV tolerant hybrid from Syngenta after SY Buzzard and it comes with more broad spectrum activity against the RPV strain in addition to the standard PAV and MAV strains.
  This is a significant step up in activity against this damaging disease.

• At 103% yield, its at the SY Buzzard yield level and in the West it yields at 107% albeit based on limited information. The specific weight looks good a 69.4 kg/hl.

• SY Kestrel shows improved straw characteristics with excellent stem stiffness and low brackling risk.

• It has average straw height compared with other hybrid, competitive against grass weeds and shows similar medium maturity (-1). 

• The variety has a good all-round disease package which is especially useful for September sowing in the south with ratings for Rhynchosporium (7), net blotch (6), mildew (7) and brown rust (6). The good disease scores are reflected in high untreated yields (89%). 

• In addition to broad-spectrum BYDV tolerance, SY Kestrel also offers tolerance to wheat dwarf virus which is becoming an increasing threat.

• Resistant to barley yellow mosaic virus.
