Laureate
Variety Positioning
- Laureate continues to dominate the English spring barley market,
with over 44% market share of the malting-types. - Fully approved by the MBC for brewing and malt distilling since 2017, it is favoured in both the English and northern end markets as a non-GN variety, with strong support from end users for both brewing and distilling.
- It has consistent high treated yields in both the East and West regions and is suitable for all soil types.
- It has produced high yields in Agrii trials (100% treated, 91% untreated) but tends to give a relatively low specific weight compared with other varieties like RGT Planet.
- A short-strawed variety (71 cm) and, while on the lower end of lodging resistance (6 treated), its brackling resistance is good (7).
- Its maturity is +1 which becomes more attractive as you go further north compared with varieties like LG Diablo (+2).
- Laureate is considered to have relatively low straw yields compared with some other varieties. It has a strong disease profile with no obvious weaknesses with scores for brown rust (5), Rhynchosporium (5) and excellent resistance to mildew (9).
- It is moderately resistant to net blotch in Agrii trials.
