Feeding the World and Caring for the Environment
Farming not only feeds the world, but it also helps to care for the environment by providing food and habitat for wildlife.
But it’s an industry that can have both positive and negative impacts on the environment, and we are therefore rightly under the spotlight.
As the UK’s largest agronomy advice service, we hold significant responsibility: We work with 20,000 farmers across 1.4 million hectares of combinable crops, representing around 40% of UK agricultural output.
We take this responsibility very seriously, and our agronomists work with farmers to grow profitable crops in a safe and environmentally sensitive way.
Our Values
We work to integrate our values in everything that we do within our company and with the farming businesses we work with.
We are proactive
We don’t just stand on the sidelines doing our own thing – we get involved at all levels, be it trying to influence policy or educating the public about farming.
We are actively involved with the Agricultural Industries Confederation (AIC), the UK trade association for the agricultural supply industry, where we have significant input on ensuring policy makers have an understanding of agronomy and the challenges facing farmers.
We also go into schools and village halls and invite groups to visit our ifarms to learn more about how food is grown. We hope we might even encourage the next generation to work in farming.
The Environment
Environmental initiatives are also something we get involved with –examples include the Voluntary Initiative (VI), Campaign for the Farmed Environment, Catchment Sensitive Farming and The Harper Adams Soil and Water Centre to name a few.
Reducing our GHG Emissions
For food production to reach net zero, we have the responsibility to reduce the emissions of the products and services we deliver on farm.
In 2022, we signed up as part of Origin Enterprises to science-based targets, working to reduce our operational and value chain emissions. As part of the group, we are targeting a 54.6% reduction in our business operations and a 32.5% reduction in emissions across the value chain by 2032 from a 2019 baseline. This forms part of our work as a Business Ambition 1.5°C member.
Reducing our water consumption
As we continue to deliver best practice training to operators to protect water quality and utilise resources efficiently, we are also dedicated to reducing our water consumption across our sites.
Due to the remote locations and variety of operations that occur at certain facilities, we are currently undertaking exercises to improve the quality of our information gathering, with the aim of setting water reduction targets at our sites.
Reducing our waste
Our goal is to prevent waste wherever possible in our operations and supply chain. However, recognising that not all waste is preventable, we aim to ensure all waste is recycled or re-used, targeting zero waste to landfill by 2025.
Currently recycling less than 50% of our waste, we understand that more work is required to accelerate our rate of progress. We are working closely with our waste contractors to improve the traceability of waste streams across all Agrii depos, and set out action plans across sites to recycling waste.
Supporting the Community
We take our responsibility seriously, investing to support UK agriculture and the rural community. We operate in a way that respects the environment and we strive to be a company that both our staff and our customers are proud to be connected with.
As a member of Linking Environment and Farming (LEAF), we are keen to promote British food and farming to a wider audience. The Open Farm Sunday is a great opportunity for growers to showcase the work they do to produce sustainable and nutritious food. To support initiatives like this, Agrii provide goody bags for growers to hand out to visitors, to help explain the journey from farm to fork.
Charity Figures
We are fortunate to be part of such a wonderful community, surrounded by wonderful people. Each year, we select charities to support through various initiatives as a business. We also encourage our employees to support their local communities and charities, to help give back to our society.
In 2022, we raised £13,400 for our chosen charities; RSABI, Farm Safety Foundation and FCN Charity. We also work very closely with 'We Are Farming Minds' and support with a number of initiatives.
Elsewhere our teams have undertaken a variety of fund raising and community support initiatives (because we do more than just raising money) including;
- Trussell Trust donations
- Action For Children Secret Santa
- Charity Bike Rides
- 5kms to Marathons, Adventure Races and Endurance Challenges
- Cake Bakes and Coffee Mornings
- Beach Cleans and Tree Planting
- Guest Speaking at Schools and Collages
- plus much much more
