Exploring Sampling & Nutrient Management for Winter-Damaged Soils
Soil Sampling and Nutrient Management in a Challenging Spring
Today we are going to be talking with RHIZA’s Jon Greenman, commercial manager and Saul Creed, crop inputs specialist.
We are going to be asking if soil sampling and nutrient management plans can help farmers and agronomists navigate the uncertainties in a challenging spring and make the most of the opportunities that SFI can bring now and in the future.

Spring Challenges and Decision-Making on Farm
John Greenman:
It’s been a difficult winter into spring with heavy rainfall impacting crop establishment. Many growers are facing delays, particularly with spring crops. By using tools available on our Contour platform, like satellite imagery and soil analysis data, we can help them manage variability in crop establishment and ensure that resources are allocated efficiently.
Introducing Contour: A Digital Farming Platform
What exactly is Contour, and how does it support farmers in real-time decision-making?
John:
Contour is our digital platform where agronomists, R&D staff, and growers can access satellite imagery, weather data, soil analysis results, and planning tools for variable rate applications and nutrient management. It keeps everything in one place, streamlining the decision-making process, especially useful in challenging seasons like this.
Nutrient Management and SFI Compliance
How do nutrient management plans align with SFI requirements?
John:
Under the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI), farmers can claim £652 annually for creating a nutrient management plan, an essential practice for effective farm management and Red Tractor compliance. Our FACTS-qualified advisers can assist with developing these plans, helping farmers align inputs with soil and crop requirements.
Soil Organic Matter Testing
Soil organic matter testing has gained more attention recently. How is it beneficial?
John:
Testing for organic matter, now encouraged under SFI, helps farmers improve water retention, soil resilience, and nutrient cycling. Even small increases in organic matter—such as a 1% rise—can significantly enhance water-holding capacity, with research indicating an extra 20,000 gallons per acre.
SFI Payments for Variable Rate Applications
There’s also mention of new SFI payments for variable rate applications. Can you explain?
John: Yes, Defra is introducing payments of £27 per hectare for variable nutrient application. This is in addition to organic matter and nutrient management payments. It’s an excellent opportunity, as variable rate applications can enhance efficiency by ensuring fertilisers are applied precisely where they’re needed.
Getting Started with Variable Rate Applications
Saul Creed:
For those new to variable rate technology, getting started involves setting up management zones within fields, performing soil analysis, and determining nutrient needs by zone. Approximately 50% of our customers already use variable rate technology, but there’s a great opportunity for others to explore the benefits and SFI payments available.
Case Studies: The Benefits of Precision Farming
Saul:
In trials, variable rate nitrogen applications led to a 25% increase in tiller numbers, improved yields, and fertiliser savings. One farm saved around £7,000 by reducing fertiliser use where it wasn’t needed, proving the substantial impact of this approach.
Up-to-Date Satellite Imagery
How current is the satellite imagery provided?
John:
Satellites pass every 2–3 days, but cloud cover can occasionally delay updates. However, Riser provides cloud-free imagery every six days, ensuring timely information even in cloudy conditions.
Maximising SFI Payments
John: Alongside variable rate payments, there are organic matter payments of £6 per hectare, nutrient management payments, and other SFI options, adding up to a significant opportunity for farmers. With these payments, farmers can support sustainable practices while receiving financial incentives.
Top Tips for Farmers
Saul:
Assess soil sampling needs now, especially for organic matter. Booking soil testing early helps take advantage of SFI payments and ensures accurate nutrient management.
John:
Take advantage of payments for practices you’re likely already doing or considering, such as variable rate application and organic matter testing. The payments provide extra support for actions that align with productivity and environmental goals.
