RapidAim: Real-Time Codling Moth Monitoring for Your Orchard

News - 08.08.24

Agrii, we understand how crucial it is for you to stay on top of pest management in your orchards. That’s why we’re excited to introduce RapidAim, a pheromone-based detection system that allows you to monitor codling moth populations remotely and in real-time.

Developed in Australia, this innovative system is designed to improve crop protection and optimise the timing of your pest control measures.

Here’s what RapidAim can do for you and your orchard.

More Precise Crop Protection

With RapidAim, you can monitor codling moths more accurately, allowing you to use insecticides more efficiently. This precision is key, especially when using biological products that need to be applied at the right time to be most effective.

You’ll be able to target your treatments more precisely, which can help boost the performance of your pest management strategies.

Available Exclusively Through Agrii

RapidAim is being brought to the UK by UPL and will be available exclusively through Agrii. We’ve been running trials in orchards across Kent and East Sussex throughout 2023 and 2024 to ensure the system is perfectly suited to UK conditions.

Following these trials, you’ll be able to access RapidAim nationwide from 2025 after its official launch later this autumn.

How RapidAim Works

Unlike the traditional pheromone traps you might be familiar with, RapidAim isn’t a trap at all – it’s a monitoring station. As codling moths pass through the device, their numbers are recorded and transmitted to your account every 30 minutes. You can access this data via a user-friendly dashboard on your smartphone, tablet, or desktop.

With this real-time data at your fingertips, you’ll have complete oversight of your orchard, enabling you to fine-tune your insecticide timings for better results.

Users can monitor pest data in real time via a smart device or a desktop computer with the data being displayed set to the user’s preferences

Reliable, Real-Time Data for Informed Decisions

RapidAim offers you a more accurate and reliable form of monitoring. You won’t need to rely on images captured intermittently throughout the day, nor will you be dependent on 4G mobile networks.

Instead, RapidAim uses an algorithm to identify codling moths and relays the information via the narrow-band mobile network, ensuring strong connectivity even in rural areas.

With RapidAim, you’ll have access to consistent and reliable data, allowing you to make informed decisions about your pest control measures.

Field Trials and Feedback

Over the past two seasons, we’ve been working with a network of growers across Kent and Sussex to test and validate RapidAim. Many growers who participated in these trials reported that the data provided by RapidAim was more consistent and accurate than what they were seeing from traditional pheromone traps.

These growers were able to see the value of real-time data in supporting their crop protection strategies. We believe RapidAim will give you the same confidence in managing your orchard.

Support for Targeted Insecticide Use

RapidAim is more than just a monitoring tool; it’s a decision-support system designed for the digital age. According to Stuart Jackson, our head of technical services at UPL, RapidAim allows you to target control measures with precision, helping you justify the use of insecticides when needed.

Post-application monitoring is another key feature. After applying insecticides, RapidAim will help you track pest populations to determine if additional treatments are necessary or if the initial application was sufficient.

Proven Technology from Australia

The technology behind RapidAim was initially developed by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia’s national science agency, to improve control of fruit fly. After its success in commercial settings, the system was adapted to target codling moths at the request of apple growers.

RapidAim has already been adopted by major apple-growing regions around the world, including New Zealand and Washington State in the USA. Now, we’re bringing it to you here in the UK to help you better manage your orchard.

Optimise Your Pest Control

If you’re ready to take your pest management to the next level, RapidAim is the tool you need. With real-time, reliable data, you can optimise your insecticide use, protect your crops more effectively, and stay ahead of the game.

We’ll be launching RapidAim to growers this autumn, and we’re excited to see how it will benefit your orchards.
